These have been an object of some interest by the public health community, as this type of epidemiology is, in theory, preventable and could bring several different benefits to the population, not least economically (Shaw, 1999). Research in this area is important because a focus on preventable health outcomes is one major way in which the wider public health force can identify and address adverse life circumstances to improve health.
